Heat protection and energy savings - Effective protection of office buildings against heat and glare using film roller blinds

Interior MULTIFILM® roller blinds offer reliable heat protection for windows.
The core of the roller blinds is a polyester film with aluminium coating facing the outside. This film acts like a mirror: If solar radiation falls onto the roller blinds, the aluminium layer reflects it back to the outside immediately. This way, solar energy cannot convert into heat in the room. The film acts as heat protection shield of the window and reduces heat build-up inside the rooms.     Heat protecting effect of film roller blinds

    MULTIFILM® film roller blinds verifiably keep heat away from the room and counteract room overheating during summer.

    The core of the roller blinds is a polyester film with aluminium coating facing the outside. This film acts like a mirror and reflects incident solar energy back to the outside immediately, before it can be converted into heat inside the room.

    A study on thermal room climate proves it. Compared with several interior and exterior sun protection systems, the film roller blind achieves very good results: approx. 30 % cooling energy can be saved using MULTIFILM® film roller blinds. In terms of energy aspects, exterior Venetian blinds have a slight edge over film roller blinds; however, they offer only 90 % availability when it comes to cutting off wind. On the other hand, interior film roller blinds are in action all through the 365 days of the year.

    The film roller blind with side guides acts against the thermal loss through the window due to its insulating properties. The aluminium coating reflects the heat radiating from inside to the outside back into the room.

  • 37 % savings in cooling and heating energy

    Energy savings by film roller blinds in comparison To what extent power savings for cooling and heating can actually be achieved with MULTIFILM® film blinds has been investigated on the basis of a calculation model.1) 

    The approach:

    • Estimation of annual power requirement for a non-shaded office space and comparison with that of a shaded room
    • Comparison of four different sun protection systems

    • Office space (19.4 m2 ) with 2 persons and 2 PCs
    • Window (5.4 m2) facing the south and thermal insulating glass
      according to DIN EN 14501-C (g-value: 59 %; U-value: 1.2 W/m2K)

    Results:

    • By using film roller blinds, 37% energy savings on cooling and heating can be achieved as against a nonshaded window. The film roller blind takes up the top position among comparable systems.
    • The Fc-value of the studied film-glass combination is at 0.44. This corresponds to energy efficiency class 2 ("high").2)

Energy Label for film roller blinds

Energy label for film roller blinds on triple sun and insulation glazingsEnergy Label represent in a descriptive and transparency way the energetic behavior for devices, buildings or cars in the well-known energy efficiency classes. Thereby they offer a good and much-used decision making tool when purchasing goods.

Now this decision making tool is available also for film roller blinds: The Energy label of the ift (Institut for window technique) in Rosenheim evaluates and illustrates windows with sun protection systems regarding their energy efficiency in the well-known energy efficiency classes.

The classification certifies: Film roller blinds improve the energy efficiency class of a window depending on the window type both with the required heating and with the required cooling energy up to 4 stages. Even with high-quality windows film roller blinds contribute substantially to the energy saving.

With the Energy label of the ift Rosenheim once more the high energy saving potentials by film roller blinds and their positive effects on the energy balance of the window/ the building is confirmed.

Heat protection under the roof

The heat protection of roof-lights is particularly important. Film roller blinds provide effective heat protection under the roofBy the inclination of roof-lights the solar radiation strike the window glass in rectangular direction and enters completely into the room. Therefore attics with windows heat up faster than this without roof-lights. 

MULTIFILM® film roller blinds are working against this process. By reflecting most of the solar radiation at the aluminum layer back to outside the blinds keep the solar radiation away from the room and offer thereby an excellent heat protection. In this way the heating up of the rooms will be decreased and the room temperatures remain pleasant.
